Quigley Returns to Action
SEEKONK -- Despite battling Stage 4 prostate cancer and melanoma, RIGA Hall of Famer Paul Quigley continues to compete in the game he loves.
He's a nine-time winner of this championship and there was no way he was going to miss it. He shot 8-over 79 during Round 1, but missed the cut by two strokes. Nonetheless, he was all smiles.
"It's always nice to hear Joe P say on the first tee, 'Paul Quigley, nine-time Stroke Play champion.' I'm proud of it."
Due to his cancer diagnosis in early April, the 80-year-old hasn't been able to play as much as he would like. In fact, Monday was his first 18-hole round of the season and said he felt good afterwards. Then, about six week ago, he had a cancerous lump removed from his right forearm and a skin graft performed.
After his procedure, he asked if it would be possible to play in the Stroke Play Championship. His doctor gave him the go-ahead. Quigley made the most of it.
